Three of the 20 will win £10,000 to go to their charity of choice

20 young photographers from around the UK have been selected as the final candidates for a community-led project.

Huawei and Dazed magazine team launched the Reveal the Read You initiative to tap into undiscovered creative talent. Over the past month, the twenty photographers have been using the Huawei P10 smartphone, which comes with a Leica dual-lens camera, to document community stories and issues such as gender equality, sexuality, disability and the environment.

Hackney photographer Shingi Rice is one of the shortlisted, who submitted a collection of images raising awareness for invisible disabilities. Should she win, £10,000 will go to her chosen charity, Invisible Disabilities Association.

“Being shortlisted for this competition means a lot to me as I want to create as much understanding and awareness when it comes to invisible disabilities, be it physical or mental, as possible,” she says. “Even though we are advanced in many ways, there is a huge divide in terms of our understanding of these issues and I hope to close the gap through this project.”

Hackney features heavily in the contest, with two other photographers focusing their work here. Flora Maclean’s portrayal of her own football team, Romance FC, documents the tight-knit collective of women and non-binary people pushing for change through sport.

Shoreditch Youth Dance is profiled by Kat Collings. She captures them dancing where they live, rather than under the spotlight, giving a more personal insight.

Islington gets its recognition too, with Pedro Mantua’s pictures of the Castle Climbing Centre by Clissold Park. As a regular visitor to the centre, he shows his love for the sport.

A panel of independent judges will award three winners the money towards their chosen cause, helping them to make a tangible, positive impact on their communities. One will be able to exhibit their work in an outdoor pop-up gallery in the heart of their community.
