The team behind Victoria Park festival All Points East has announced a free community programme to take place between the two weekends of live music in May.

In the Neighbourhood will feature activities and events hosted by organisations from Hackney and Tower Hamlets over four days during half term.

Bookending it will be the All Points East festival with headliners Bjork, The xx and LCD Soundsystem and APE Presents..., featuring Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The National and Catfish And The Bottlemen.

Event manager, Jenny Hamada said: “Offering our event site back to the community to enjoy a diverse range of free content is part of our continued drive to enhance the positive impact of our event.”

The promise of a community festival was one of the reasons Goldenvoice/AEG Presents secured the contract for All Points East, replacing Lovebox and Field Day, which have both moved south of the river.

It will feature street food put on by Tower Hamlets’ Sourced Market, pop up bars stocking Redchurch and Truman’s and arts and crafts sessions from Hackney Arts.

Chisenhale Studios, a Tower Hamlets arts project, will be showcasing its three year Stop Play Record initiative which saw youngsters create two short films. And the live music will be curated by Global Local, which supports culturally diverse music in and around the East End.

Bethnal Green’s aerial circus company Upswing will also be performing, and Limehouse theatre Half Moon will be hosting performances and storytelling for youngsters.

Other theatrical entertainment will come from Kazzum, Coney and Stitch in Time while the more sports minded youngsters will be able to take part in football workshops hosted by Alive and Kicking, which makes durable balls in Africa, and freestyle footballer Colin Nell.

The full timetables for all activities will be released “soon”.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs said: “When we made the agreement with the promoters we ensured that community benefits are a key part of what will be delivered.

“It is an exciting opportunity to showcase our borough’s rich and diverse cultural talent and ensure that local people have a chance to get involved in what should be a great event.”
