A new pizza takeaway in Clapton played host to Home Alone actor Macaulay Culkin and his band for a performance dedicated to the Italian feast.

Yard Sale Pizza in Lower Clapton Road – born from a supper club in the founders’ back garden in Homerton – welcomed the celebrity guest at its launch party attended by about 20 friends, family and members of the press last night.

Once one of the world’s most famous ever child stars, Culkin, 33, and his four-strong band The Pizza Underground – a pizza-themed tribute act to 1960s rock outfit The Velvet Underground – formed last year, and have just embarked on a UK tour which also took them to Shoreditch venue Concrete yesterday.

The comedy group replace the lyrics of The Velvet Underground hits with pizza-related jargon and have renamed iconic songs like All Tomorrow’s Parties to All Pizza Parties, and Walk on the Wild Side to Take a Bite of the Wild Slice.

Yard Sale Pizza, which focuses on delivery but will have a few dine in spots, opens in the first week of June with an alcohol licence and has been set up by friends Dan Spinney, Johnnie Tate and Nick Buckland, who are all 29.

The concept for the takeaway – two years in the making – was developed after a successful supper club in Johnnie and Nick’s back yard in Homerton attracted some 300 people over the course of a summer.

Nick, who has quit a career in web design for the project, said: “We had a pizza oven in our back garden and we started making pizza, inviting people round. “We got more and more people along and they all said we should go for it and open a place – and it has always been my dream to own a restaurant and Johnnie loves making pizza, so we decided to make it a reality.”

Dan said: “We originally wanted to get a place in Well Street but this shop came up – and it’s all happening at the moment on this strip.

“We’re all about great Italian pizza, delivered. A lot of people don’t do that very well as normally Neapolitan pizzas are so thin and don’t transport well, but we’ve developed a sough dough to be about half way between that and a classic, so it is slightly thicker and delivers well.” Of the launch event, he said: “We’re really glad our friends have been here to share this with us. With the band, I didn’t think for a minute it would actually going to happen until it happened. They were on tour, the timing was right, they tried our pizza and they loved it and the band were all really nice.”
