Forty years of art by Martin Puryear will go on display at Parasol in September
Forty years of work by distinguished American artist Martin Puryear will be displayed at the Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art.
This will be the first time Puryear’s sculpture and works on paper are displayed in a London public institution.
His abstract sculptures take centre stage: they’re entirely hand-made by the artist using traditional techniques, reflecting his lifelong interest in and respect for skilled craftsmanship and natural materials.
Puryear’s forms are immediately recognisable thanks to their unique aesthetic and sense of cultural history, which are intriguing in their subtlety. As the artist once said, “I value the referential quality of art, the fact that a work can allude to things or states of being without in any way representing them.”
This is an unmissable retrospective that promises to showcase the best of Puryear’s approach to his materials and his ability to combine to produce profoundly considered works.
The Martin Puryear exhibition runs from 19 September to 8 December 2017 at Parasol unit foundation for contemporary art, 14 Wharf Road, N1 7RW
