A pop-up bookshop is coming to Shoreditch selling only books written by women.

To mark International Women’s Day and 100 years of partial women’s suffrage, The Like A Woman Bookshop in Rivington Street will be celebrating the persistence of women who have fought for change over the years.

Open from March 5-9, Penguin is partnering with Waterstones to open the bookshop, which will feature works from authors such as Malorie Blackman, Zadie Smith, Malala Yousafzai, Caitlin Moran and Margaret Atwood.

“Women’s voices being heard and taken seriously is key to achieving gender equality, and with The Like A Woman Bookshop we’re making room for those voices to be elevated and celebrated,” says Penguin Random House creative manager Zainab Juma. “We’re creating a space where readers can look to incredible writers, activists and pioneers for the inspiration to go forward and make change like a woman.”

A series of Penguin Live events will run throughout the week:

Life Lessons from Remarkable Women on March 5 sees Penguin Live team up with Stylist magazine and delves into their book ‘Life Lessons from Remarkable Women: Tales of triumph, failure and learning to love yourself’. Executive editor Mandie Gower is joined by Stylist columnist and author Lucy Mangan, broadcaster and sex educator Alix Fox and campaigner and journalist Robyn Wilder.

The second event on March 7 is Women at Work, a live recording of the Virgin and Penguin Live. Life. Better. Podcast, presented by Melissa Hemsley (half of the Hemsley sisters) and joined by WEconomy author Holly Branson and The Roasting Tin Author Rukmini Iyer. They will be discussing what work means for women in the 21st century, giving tips for entrepreneurs and finding meaning in work.

The Female Gaze is the final event on March 8: an evening of essays and stories from the female perspective, in partnership with literary journal Five Dials, who have created a special edition with this theme. They gave some femme and gender non-conforming writers and artists two pages each to consider the female gaze however they chose. Contributors Deborah Levy, Sophie Mackintosh and Bridget Minamore launch this issue on International Women’s Day itself in The Like A Woman Bookshop.

Tickets for all these events are £11. 25, which includes a drink and £5 redeemable in the shop. The proceeds of tickets will be donated to Solace Women’s Aid, who have provided support and shelter for women at risk in London for more than 40 years. Books can also be bought to donate to children housed in these refuges.

The shop is open from 10am-6:30pm. March 5-9 at 1-3 Rivington Street, EC2A 3DT
