Despite what its name might suggest, the Jones Family Project is not a restaurant started by a bunch of relatives.

Still, it’s been started by a close-knit group of friends sharing a passion for food so therefore retains that strong independent vibe – always refreshing in the heart of the city where there are chain venues at every turn.

On the ground level there’s an events space which was hired out for a party on the night of our visit, while downstairs is an impressive restaurant space with a modern whimsical wonderland theme – think trees and giant ceramic pots alongside slick, brightly coloured furniture and striking splashes of paint.

Its menu offers a little bit of everything, with carefully sourced British produce brought alive with fusions of Asian, Mediterranean and even Mexican cuisine.

To start, I opted for red curry spiced crispy squid with chilli and mango sauce as well as lime mayonnaise.

An unusual mix – but one that worked, with the squid aromatic, the breadcrumbs greaseless and nicely complimented by the punchy sweet tastes of the accompaniments.

My partner tried the tomato, cheese and risotto cakes which were moist and tasty with an almond, basil and tomato pesto adding a welcome nutty dimension.

For mains I opted for the fish dish of the day – red snapper cooked perfectly, with a creamy combination of giant couscous and roasted vegetables.

But this place prides itself on its grills, and my partner’s fillet steak was no disappointment.

The deliciously charred meat was tender and flavoursome, cooked medium rare and drizzled with creamy peppercorn sauce and served with crunchy fries.

My partner’s dessert choice of triple chocolate brownie with coconut sorbet and salted caramel sauce was dreamy, but my apple and vanilla panna cotta selection felt slightly bland in comparison, despite the apple and black pepper compote.

This restaurant offers an interesting menu, with real attention to detail and an impressive space – a perfect bolthole as the nights draw in.

It also boasts a pop up space should you wish to try something completely out of the ordinary – it’s currently hosting a 1920s Langley’s No.8 gin and food pairing menu which will remain in place for the next couple of weeks.
