Alex Jackson brings us up to date with his top pick screenings at Rio this week, including a second run of Blackkklansman, a celebration of Indian cinema and a live broadcast of King Lear

Hi Hackney

We’ve had a busy week at east London’s best-dressed electric theatre. Over a thousand of you joined us for Hitchcock, Turkish Star Wars et al during the course of the weekend, plus our resident historian Andrew showed off the building’s intimate zones to visitors as part of Open House London.

This week we’re pleased to boast as equally action-packed a schedule as last.

A Simple Favour, Cold War and Climax continue, joined by a second run of Blackkklansman for anyone who missed it first time round.

Kicking off our partnership with Ranjit S. Ruprai’s SUPA-KINO, on Saturday we present Bombay Mix, the first of a handful of double-bills celebrating Indian films and their international counterparts. This event will see a back-to-back screening of 1958 Elvis vehicle Jailhouse Rock and thematically linked 2017 Ranjit Tiwari musical caper Lucknow Central. Cinephiles take heed – don’t miss this carefully curated season of diptychs.

Then on Sunday we have yet another special double bill, featuring the Chinese films Kaili Blues and Suzhou River. It’s in collaboration with the NFT School, is curated by Giada Liu, and promises to be a thought-provoking introduction to Magical Realism in Chinese cinema.

On Thursday September 27 we present rowdy Tudor rhapsodist William Shakespeare’s King Lear, broadcast live to us courtesy of the National Theatre. Starring the great Ian McKellen and put together by Jonathan Mumby, to miss this would, truly, be a tragedy.

And as if that weren’t enough, we’ll be selling some of the excess posters from our archive in the main foyer this Sunday afternoon, so if a massive UK Quad sized print of your favourite film sounds appealing, pay us a visit.

Finally, we’ve been sorry to hear of the recent struggles being experienced at the Phoenix cinema in East Finchley. It’s one of our favourite fellow independent picture-houses and a kindred spirit of the Rio. We very much encourage film fans from all over London to take a trip to see them and enjoy their fantastic programming.
